The Faculty of Science and Engineering
This Scholarship is open to UK fee-paying students who are women and hold an offer to study an undergraduate engineering course starting in September 2026. The subjects included are:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Computer Science
- Electrical, Electronic and Mechatronic Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Integrated Foundation Year with one of the courses above
There are 20 awards for £2,000 per year of study (up to four years). Scholarships will be awarded to the highest performing applicants or those with the highest potential to attain based on their UCAS application within each engineering discipline (at least two students per discipline).
If you're successful, you'll be notified by the end of April. To accept, you'll need to select the engineering course at Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ as your firm choice via UCAS.
To be considered, you need to: 
- be a woman (inclusive of trans women) / be assigned female at birth (such as AFAB non-binary);
- have an offer of study an undergraduate engineering course at The University of Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ, starting September 2026;
- be recognised as a UK resident and paying home (UK) fees;
- have chosen Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ as your firm choice by the June UCAS deadline;
- commit to contributing to outreach and recruitment activities, especially encouraging more women to study engineering;
- achieve a minimum of 60% average performance during each year of study.  
In addition to the financial support, you'll become part of our valued Shilling community at Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ. You'll have access to an academic mentor, who is a friendly face within the Faculty that you can go to for academic advice and pastoral support. Your mentor can support you with career development opportunities as well as helping you to build networks with peers and other female engineers.
Payment will not be made during the Industrial Experience Year.

The Excellence Scholarships are open to all UK fee-paying students applying for undergraduate courses in the Faculty of Science and Engineering starting September 2026.
There are 25 awards for £2,000 per year of study (up to four years), awarded to the highest performing applicants in each discipline who are WP, WP+ or WP++ and meet the criteria below. Awards will be made based on the information provided in the UCAS application and achieved results at A-level.
Awardees will be contacted after registration in Semester 1.
To be considered, you need to:
- be recognised as a UK resident and be paying home (UK) fees;
- have an offer to study an undergraduate engineering course at The University of Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ, starting September 2026.
- have chosen Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ as your firm choice during the main UCAS cycle;
- meet the WP, WP+ or WP++ flag;
- maintain a 60% average performance for each year of your degree.
There is no separate application form. All eligible UK students who hold an offer of a place within the Faculty at The University of Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ will be considered for a scholarship.
The awards are also open to students completing a foundation year.
Payment will not be made during the Industrial Experience Year.
Ted and Pat Smith were warm friends of The University of Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ. They married in March 1958, and Ted came to Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ ten years later as a Professor of Metallurgy.
During his 20 years of service, Ted was a senior leader of the Department of Materials and an influential teacher to many students. Pat provided considerable support to Ted’s career, and they travelled extensively together. Ted formally retired in 1988, but they remained close friends of Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ throughout their lives.
When Ted and Pat passed away, they left a legacy to the University to support undergraduates in engineering or science, and particularly wanted to help students studying in the field of materials science.
The Ted and Pat Smith Scholarship is a merit-based award available to students who are:
- entering Year 1 of a science or engineering degree;
- from widening participation backgrounds.
Each recipient will receive an annual scholarship of £2,000 per year for up to four years of undergraduate study (not including a placement/study abroad year).
There are up to eight scholarships available for entry in September 2026.
Students within the Department of Materials are given preference in selection and allocation.
You do not need to apply for this scholarship – the award will be made based on your UCAS application. Eligible students will then be ranked on academic merit.
Scholarship holders will receive the scholarship annually, subject to satisfactory academic progress and performance.
The Michael Bates Outreach Scholarship has been generously funded by a gift from the Bowyer-Bates family in memory of their son, Michael Bates (BSc Clothing Engineering, 1991).
As a student at Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ, Michael thrived and graduated at the top of his class. He was creative, entrepreneurial and industrious and, following his studies, went on to have a successful career in textiles. He secured his first role at a clothing production factory in South Wales, before moving on to roles in clothing sourcing that led him to work in Hong Kong, China and New Delhi. Later in his career, he returned to the UK and set up his own business for sourcing and designing clothing, before moving into Property Development and Management.
Michael sadly passed away in 2019. Michael’s family wanted to help outstanding students undertaking fashion and textile related courses to thrive at Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ, just as Michael did, and set up this scholarship in his memory.
There is one scholarship available for 2026 entry of £2,000 per year for up to four years (not including a placement/study abroad year). The award is open to home students (UK) who meet widening participation criteria and are studying on an undergraduate course in the Department of Materials. First preference will be given to students whose household income has been assessed as less than or equal to £35,000.

The Graham McKenna-Mayes Memorial Fund was established to honour the life and legacy of local businessman Graham McKenna-Mayes and to support widening participation in higher education.
Launched by Graham’s family and close friends, the fund aims to help talented students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds realise their academic potential at The University of Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ.
It particularly focuses on supporting students from the Greater Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ area who are choosing to study Law or Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES).
Eligibility
Each year, the fund provides an annual £2,000 grant to eligible applicants. These bursaries are designed to help students overcome financial barriers to studying at Ô°ÇøÒùÂÒ and to act as a first stepping-stone towards building a successful career after graduation.
Students do not need to submit an application to be considered – those who meet the eligibility criteria are automatically assessed and contacted if allocated a bursary.
